Marta Brunet in motion. A cartography of Montaña adentro’s writing process

Authors

Abstract

The complexity of the Brunetian project cannot be perceived without the comprehension of its fictional mechanisms. Although part of the Chilean literary canon, Marta Brunet’s work has never found an extended reading of certain of its central themes, as well as an in-depth analysis of its means of composition. Among the consequences of Brunet’s literature recent rediscovery, perhaps the most important one is the publication of critical editions of her narratives, in which her rewriting movement appears with emphasis. This article proposes a reading of her first novel, Montaña adentro (1923), from its manuscript —the only known manuscript by Marta Brunet, a very short notebook— and from its multiple editions. The main objective is to present unknown elements about the path of writing and the creative process of the writer, organizing what Lorena Amaro Castro calls “a truly rebellious textuality”. Finally, the critical possibilities that genetic readings offer are presented.
