Abstract

The visual representation of autism has been the subject of constant debate and transformation, reflecting changes in the social perception of this condition. For decades, symbols such as the puzzle piece and the color blue have dominated representations of autism, but have also been criticized for perpetuating stigmas and misconceptions. In Chile, as in many other parts of the world, there is a historical debt in creating of a symbol that truly represents the identity and diversity of the autistic spectrum from the voice of its community.
In this context, the article addresses how Chilean autistic people perceive current symbols and which ones they consider to be more authentic and positive representations of autism. Based on the results of a survey conducted among people who are part of this community in Chile, it seeks to contribute to a necessary dialogue about visual representation, acceptance, and neurodivergent pride.
